Fashion Files – Wearing White to a Wedding

Royal Wedding - The Wedding Ceremony Takes Place Inside Westminster Abbey

photos-official-kim-kardashian-wedding-pics-prenup-revealed-plus-mom-to-manage-hubby-kris

The Kardashians are doing it. So did Pippa Middleton. Colored wedding dresses are on the rise. But is it socially acceptable now to wear white to weddings? We have to say NO. And shockingly we are seeing guests wear white more and more frequently.

Technically there is no rule of etiquette that forbids wearing white to a wedding, but for as far back as we can recall it has been completely taboo. A girl gets a handful of times in her life to truly shine, and her wedding day is one of them, so why chance putting even the slightest of dampers on a day with such great importance. Plus, do you really want to be old Aunt Rita’s gossip topic for the night? In most people’s mind it is a big no no to wear white as a guest.

If the bride requests everyone wear white, please do. That is the small exception to the rule though. There are so many great fashion trends out right now, so take the opportunity to dress up and make a statement with a great color choice or awesome silhouette.  The bride will appreciate her time in the spotlight and you will probably feel much more comfortable. Just say no to guests wearing white to weddings.

WeddingWire World Extravaganza

photo 1

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to go and represent As You Wish at WeddingWire World. I’m sure everyone is familiar with the WeddingWire website, as it’s a wonderful tool to utilize for finding your wedding vendors. WeddingWire World was a chance for vendors from all over the country to get together and discuss the industry. It was an amazing experience. So much was learned, so much fun was had, and there is so much that I cannot wait to carry over into our every day business practices. I won’t bore you with the information I heard on better email communication + search engine optimization + so much more, but I will share a few pictures of the fun that the amazing 757 vendors had.

Today marks our first post of Trendy Topics that we will be bringing to you weekly. This week’s topic is

Engagement Pictures!

Unknown

With summer winding down, and the heat finally beginning to show some reprieve, we know that a lot of our engaged couples are prepping for engagement photos. So, we figured it would be a wonderful opportunity to shed a little light on the whole idea. We will give you our opinion and also share the opinion of some fantastic photographers as well, and hopefully you can walk away feeling a little more sound regarding the process.

Why is it so important to get engagement pictures done?
-Well, who doesn’t love beautiful photos around the house? But also, it is the perfect time to get to know your photographer as well as to start to feel more comfortable in front of the camera. After all, on your wedding day the camera will be all over you like ice cream on a hot summer day.

Tips for your Engagement Session:
-Dress comfortably. Yes you might be dying to show off those 5 inch stilettos, but unless you are a seasoned shoe vet they are probably not the best idea with all of the walking and standing that you will be doing.
-Don’t be afraid to incorporate props. Props are fun, and they add some serious punch to your pictures. So don’t be afraid of a handmade sign, a little glitter, or a full on stylized shoot {this is the perfect way to get acquainted with your wedding coordinator as well}.
-Be true to you. Are you a beach couple that loves to surf or paddle board? Do you share a love of comic books? Do you cheer for rival football teams? Incorporate it into your session. This makes it fun and timeless, but most of all it shows the true YOU.

Brea from Photography By Brea also shared her fabulous opinion:

• It is SO awkward getting  your photo taken by a stranger. It’s a weird thing to say as a photographer, but it’s true! When better to get rid of that awkwardness and allow your photographer to become more than a stranger than by having an engagement session? I love getting to walk around town with my couples, get to know more about them, see what makes them tick, and help them open up in front of my camera. By the time the wedding rolls around it’s like we’re old friends! For my own wedding the engagement session was SO helpful! I was incredibly awkward and just froze in front of the camera. Now keep in mind I had already been a photographer for a couple of years at this point, but it didn’t make it any easier! Our wedding day was perfect and we could jump right in and already understood the directions that Jen gave us since we had worked with her before, and we were able to make the best use of our time and the light before sunset!
• My other major tip is to choose a location that has meaning for you as a couple. These photos are capturing an important and fleeting time in your life. You want to be able to capture a snippet of that time aside from how you look! The location you choose is another big piece of telling your unique story. One of my couples planned a destination wedding but loved the town they lived in. We took photos in front of their favorite burrito joint, and a boutique shop that they registered at, and other cute little corners in their town. Jamie and Tommy (this is the couple in the Baltimore images below) are big Baltimore City people, so getting photos on Federal Hill with the Baltimore skyline was a must have. Maybe places that matter in your relationship aren’t exactly photo worthy– for example, my husband and I met and got engaged at a retirement community… not exactly the best place for photos. At least make sure you pick a location that is right for you as a couple! We chose to do ours in the city and we are so NOT city people. I look back on the images and while they’re GORGEOUS, they’re just really not us and I wish we had chosen a nature-y location rather than going with what I thought would “look cool”.
Here are some of Brea’s amazing pictures, and these are sure to inspire you to rush out and take engagement pictures:

The amazing Jen from Jen and Ashley Photography also shared some amazing advice about engagement photos!
1.  Outfits – Typically we encourage our couples to bring two outfits to an engagement session.  One would be more casual and one would be more dressy!  The outfits don’t have to be “matchy-matchy” at all!  It’s best to stay away from crazy patterns because they usually won’t photograph as nicely.  As far as accessories go, don’t be afraid to go for the super bright colors that pop!  The most important thing to consider when choosing outfits is to make sure that you’re both comfortable!  Don’t feel like you have to wear something super fancy and then feel uncomfortable wearing it!
2.  Professional Hair & Makeup – A lot of times our brides like to do their own makeup and hair for their engagement session, which is absolutely fine!  However, this is also a great opportunity for a trial run of wedding day hair and makeup.  You can see how well the makeup photographs, and see if you like how it looks!  Also, you’ll feel that much more confident while having your pictures taken!
Here are a few fantastic pictures from Jen + Ashley, and they show the use of outfits extremely well!

A beautiful wedding at The Hermitage

megfred-7

The As You Wish team had the honor of being a part of Meaghann and Fred’s August wedding day.  Both the ceremony and reception were held at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia which is such a beautiful location!!  The ceremony was held in the East Garden, surrounded by tall trees and beautiful greenery with the water serving as a natural backdrop.  For any couple wanting to get married by the water, this is a wonderful option!

The cocktail hour took place on the main lawn of the property where guests enjoyed playing cornhole, lounging on adirondack chairs by the water, and a musical mix of  blues and reggae played by their talented DJ, Roger Cruz of Astro Entertainment.

Sweetwater Cuisine catered the event and served their deliciously famous strawberry salad, and sweet potato biscuit bar with honey, jams, and jellies followed by the guest’s choice of entree of either an herb stuffed chicken pinwheel or shrimp and grits.  YUM!  For dessert Sweetwater provided red velvet cupcakes displayed on pie racks in lieu of a traditional wedding cake.

Palette of Petals did a wonderful job of bringing Meaghan’s floral vision to life!  Meaghan carried a natural just-picked style, hand tied bouquet of cream spray garden roses, cream stock, peach hypericum, fuchsia freesia, pinkish-peach snapdragons, white waxflower, and light blue delphinium.  Her reception tables had tablescapes of similar florals in mason jars.  Guests also had the option of sitting at cocktail tables with high chairs.  We love the idea of mixed seating, as it adds some fun into the mix!

When we first started working with Meaghan she made it very clear that she wanted her wedding day to be unique and personalized to them as a couple, and fun!  We fully support the belief that every wedding should have the same foundation, and Meaghan and Fred’s wedding was  exactly that!

C.M.E. Design Services did an amazing job of creating a custom invitation suite for Meaghan and Fred.  They were printed on a shimmer paper, and made in the likeness of the event, showcasing the brick at the Hermitage and the stars and string bulb lights that lit the sky as guests danced the night away.

Special thanks to Kelly West for the beautiful images, and the As You Wish team for pictures of the tablescapes.

Best of wishes to you two lovebirds!

Courtney & Matt

Courtney and Matt were married on July 7, 2012 and the As You Wish team was so excited to be a part of it!  They held their wedding ceremony at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk, Virginia.  And what a beautiful catholic church it was!

Palette of Petals provided the floral arrangements for Courtney, and they really did an amazing job!  Courtney chose black bridesmaid dresses, with purple and green bouquets for the girls

Image

The bridesmaid bouquets included an arrangement of purple freesia, purple stock, purple hydrangea, green roses, green hypericum berries, purple lisianthus, and green fugi mums. The stems were tied with lemongrass green ribbon and accented with a band of purple rosette ribbon

Image

Courtney’s bridal bouquet included a robust arrangement of Picasso Calla Lilies, cream hypericum berries, cream roses, cream stock, and hydrangea, with delicate drops of rhinestones placed throughout the blooms.  The stems were tied with a deep purple ribbon and adorned with rhinestone accents as well

Courtney and Matt’s reception was held at Hilton 31st at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  Guests enjoyed the ocean view from the ballroom as well as the musical talents of the local Hampton Roads band, Borderline Crazy

The tables were draped in black linens and accented with silver chiavari chairs and silver plate chargers.  Menu cards were delicately placed within a folded clover green napkin, and placed on top of each guests’ charger.  Favor boxes were then placed at each place setting

Palette of Petals created an assortment of beautiful centerpieces to adorn the tables.  We love the look of these floating gel candles in the cylinder vases

Emily Patti of Patti Cakes created a beautiful wedding cake, and fun football themed groom’s cake for the couple
